If all you know about MBTI is 4 letters from 16Personalities, you were unfortunately misinformed.16P is a test without any understanding of Type Psychology and what it's made of. By only using the 4 letters, you fall into the habit of basing things on traits and boxes you in single letters. Note this mbti section is an abridged Heavily Simplified crash course for beginners, I HIGHLY recommend reading and learning about it on your own.MBTI: Categorizes how you perceive and judge information. It is made up of Cognitive Functions. Your MBTI will be your preferred 4 to use.Cognitive Functions: 8 different processes of how you collect information and make decisions. They are not traits, but rather how someone interacts with reality. They're split into two groups: Judging and Perceiving.

Functions are split into extraverted (e) and introverted (i). Below is the overall theme of each one.e : used to connect with the outside world
i : used to connect with your internal world

JUDGING FUNCTIONS: Thinking & Feeling

THINKING ( T )FEELING ( F )
Te = Extraverted Thinking: What works for everyone, efficiencyFe = Extraverted Feeling: What others feel, harmony
Ti = Introverted Thinking: What works for me, my logicFi = Introverted Feeling: What I feel, my truth

PERCEIVING FUNCTIONS: Sensing & Intuition

SENSING ( S )INTUITION ( N )
Se = Extraverted Sensing: What everyone's experiencing, in the momentNe = Extraverted Intuition: Ideas for society's future, endless possibilities
Si = Introverted Sensing: What I've experienced, my historyNi = Introverted Intuition: Ideas for my future, seer-like instinct

T & F are opposites of each other. S & N are opposites of each other.CLICK ME for detailed description of the functions. Or move on to the next page.NEXT

COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS

You know the gist of it, but what exactly do each of the functions represent? This is to expand your understanding. As a reminder:( e ) Extraverted functions -> connect to the outside world.
( i ) Introverted functions -> internal connections within you.

JUDGING: Deciding information. How you make decisions.

THINKING ( T ) aka LogicFEELING ( F ) aka Values
Te: "What will Work?" Like an office. Concerned with organizing the external world. Problem-solving, result-oriented. Efficiency and Productivity. Structuring & effectiveness; quick thinker. Can be seen as bossy / controlling.Fe: "What do all of us value?" Like a hospital. Feeling the external world. Responds based on group values / social norms than own interests. Suppress their own values for the sake of accommodating / caring for others, and neglecting their identity. Can be seen as fake / pandering.
Ti: "Why does it work that way?" Like a Science Lab. Organizes their thoughts, not the world. Logical reasoning and consistency. Thorough thinker, accuracy is key. Highly analytical. Can be seen as emotionally detached / inconsiderate to others.Fi: "What do I value?" Like a compass, leads you to your truth. Authenticity with oneself. Understands self and is in tune with their values. Not as swayed by others' values. Concerned with what holds meaning to themself & their interests. Be true to oneself. Can be seen as selfish / absorbed.

PERCEIVING: Observing information. How you experience new things.

SENSING ( S ) aka ExperiencingINTUITION ( N ) aka Envisioning
Se: "What is happening right now?" Like a camera. Present and in the real world. Lives in the moment. In tune with their surroundings, experiencing the world unfiltered. Observant & hands-on. Act first, think next. Can be seen as idiotic / impulsive / reckless.Ne: "What could be?" Like the unexplored universe, time and space. Sees the potential in the external world. Inventive, innovative, idea generator. So many possibilities in existence, always entertaining the thought: What if? Can be seen as scatter-brained, disorganized, lazy.
Si: "What has happened before?" Like a calculator with storage. Associates world around them with past experiences, rules, & memories. Detail oriented. Recalls easily. Tried & true methods. Reliable & traditional. Can be seen as inflexible / "by the book" & judgemental.Ni: "What will be?" Like a forecast. Research, patterns, predictions. "Gut" feeling, answers suddenly appear. Projection into the future. Stumbling upon revelations, foresee many factors at once. Abstract pattern recognition. Can be seen as absent-minded, unaware, and too arrogant in their interpretation of reality.

FUNCTION STACKS

We use all 8 of the Cognitive Functions, but there are 4 we prefer to use the most/that are more natural for us to use. These 4 make up what is called our Function Stack.Function Stack: Cognitive Functions you prefer. You can be strong in functions outside of your stack. It doesn't change that you still have a preference for your main 4.The order matters, as it's from your most to least used:dominant (1st) > auxiliary (2nd) > tertiary (3rd) > inferior (4th)

  • Dominant(1st): The function that comes most naturally to you. You use it all the time, and you sometimes don't realize it.

  • Auxiliary(2nd): Partner to your Dominant function. Works together. You're aware of this function.

  • Tertiary(3rd): Helps Auxiliary, though it will take a while to develop at first. Like a 'fall back'.

  • Inferior(4th): The one is used least. If not developed, it will manifest unhealthily. This function is known to be the root of your life problems. Your friends or family have pointed it out to you a few times.

NOTE: Tertiary3 and Inferior4 functions will show up unhealthily when you are stressed. Since they are your weakest ones, they are used immaturely. You know how someone "doesn't act like themself" because they're stressed? It's because of their weakest function.Example:Se - Extraverted Sensing aka being present in the moment, enjoying life, physicality, movement. When stressed, types with Inferior Se will impulsively overindulge in the physical world: drugs, sex, materialistic items, etc.

STACK RULES

Do you remember the Cognitive Functions? Here's a list of each Type's stack to check out.

STACK RULES: What do you notice?1. Introverted Types’ 1st function is introverted, while Extroverted Types 1st function is Extroverted.2. Each stack has 1 T, 1 F, 1 S, and 1 N. You can't have 2 of the same type.
ex: Ti or Te, not both.
3. If the 1st function is ( e ), the 2nd will be ( i ), 3rd ( e ), 4th ( i ).
Also works as 1st ( i ), 2nd ( e ), 3rd ( i ), 4th ( e ). They will alternate.
4. J = Judging Function , P = Perceiving Function. Their structure is like this: [ J > P > P > J ] or [ P > J > J > P ]5. The opposite of your 1st function is your 4th. The opposite of your 2nd is your 3rd.
ex: [ ISFP: Fi> Se > Ni > Te ]

TYPING?

To help better understand how the cognitive functions work compared to MBTI, some tips & tricks when it comes to deriving MBTI from their function stack.

What stands out about them? When you meet someone for the first time, what will typically jump out to you is their most used extraverted function.
• Person A is very driven and work oriented. Organized. A prioritizes what needs to be done and their “overarching goal” over impulsivity. This is an example of Extraverted Thinking, Te. Because of shortcuts, you now know they are an xxTJ.

What do they focus on? Decide if they are more people oriented aka a Judger (ExxJ & IxxP), or are they more concerned with experiences and information aka a Perceiver (ExxP & IxxJ).
• After a full day of work, A gives their report. A talks about the qualities of each person, and how they’re doing, and their opinions on everyone, only skimming through tasks. Because they are using hierarchal, tribe & self language, you know they are a Judger (ExxJ or IxxP). Since they are xxTJ, this means that A is an ExTJ.

What could their aux function be? You know they are an ExTJ, so they could either be an ESTJ (Te dom Si aux) or an ENTJ (Te dom Ni aux).
• A does not like to take risks, and likes to refer to facts and authority. They constantly reference external hierarchies and letting others know what is the Right way to do things. Because of your understanding of the functions, you know this is heavy Si usage. They prioritize their past experiences, authority, and rigidity rather than planning or prolonged thinking for truth. Putting everything together, you know they are an ESTJ.
